We love it when ordinary products can be beautiful and functional at the same time, and that’s why we’re fans of the wooden kitchen utensils and accessories made by Montana-based Earlywood. Ben Bernhart was pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at Montana State University when a trip to a hardware store and a purchase of a chisel and jigsaw changed his destiny. He soon started creating kitchen utensils, and today makes a beautiful array of products such as spoons, ladles, French rolling pins, spreaders, tera scrapers and tongs. There are even spoons for babies and toddlers.
Among the best sellers are the large flat sauté spatula and the Essentials, a four-piece set with two large flat sauté spatulas, a tera scraper (perfect for cast iron cooking and cleaning) and a large spreader. He uses several types of wood, including jatoba, hard maple, Mexican ebony and bloodwood. Brad Leone, the test kitchen manager at Bon Appetit, said the large flat sauté spatula is “perfect for anyone who cooks. At All. Even a Little.” Various prices; Essentials: $48.
